Teen wins $4 million award for neonatal treatment
A 15-year-old Deerfield Beach
girl who suffered brain damage after an infection attacked
her liver and caused a stroke days after her birth won a $4.3
million jury award against two neonatal doctors.
Haylee Ann Kroll’s mother was running
a fever when she gave birth at Coral Springs Medical Center
in 1994. Haylee entered the neonatal intensive care unit and
received antibiotics, but the infection caused her blood to
stop clotting, and a clot caused the stroke. She now is partially
blind and has hearing problems.
Kroll’s attorney, Linda Alley of Sheldon
J. Schlesinger P.A. in Fort Lauderdale, claims the doctors
missed signs of the girl’s deteriorating condition,
and she didn’t receive a much-needed platelet transfusion
for 65 hours. Alley asked the jury for nearly $7 million.
After deliberating for five hours over two days,
the jury awarded $4.25 million Wednesday to Haylee for medical
expenses, pain and suffering, and $90,000 to her parents for
medical bills. The jury found negligence by two of four doctors
— Sedigheh Zolfaghari and Jose Colindres were found
50 percent negligent.

Heath of Heath & Carcioppolo in Fort Lauderdale did not return
call for comment by deadline.
