Man Severely Disabled After Botched Procedure
Awarded $14 Million
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- A man who was paralyzed after what
his attorney said was a botched, unnecessary procedure has been
awarded $14 million in a malpractice lawsuit.
Francis Ziadie, 53, no longer has any use of his legs
or right arm. And after a coma in 2002, Ziadie's speaking abilities
were significantly limited because of brain damage.
"I have nothing anymore," Ziadie told reporter
Rob Schmitt.
Ziadie went to an Emergency Room in 2002 with symptoms
of a stroke. His attorney argued in court that Dr. Hoang Doung,
a neuroradiologist, accidentally punctured his carotid artery while
inserting an unnecessary stent.
Blood from the carotid artery leaked into Ziadie's
brain, causing him to slip into a coma. After two months, the once-active
father of four regained consciousness. Ziadie is now under the constant
care of his 76-year old mother.
"He can only feed himself and shave," Olivia
Ziadie said.
Doung told Local 10 that it was a frivolous lawsuit.
He said the reason Ziadie won is that he hired a more expensive
lawyer than Doung's insurance company was willing to pay for.
The money awarded will help pay for Ziadie to live
at home with private nurses and have the company of his family,
instead of living out his life in a nursing home.
