"Hospital OKs payment for delivery-room error"

A Davie Family struggling to care for a 6-year-old son left brain-damaged
by a medical mistake likely will get $1.1 million from the hospital
responsible for the error.
North Broward Hospital Disctrict atttorneys decided Tuesday to support
Christopher Bruno's family as they seek the Legislature's blessing
for the payment. Because district flagship Broward General Medical
Center is a public hospitl, it is exempt from paying more than $200,000
in malpractice cases - unless legilsatros give their approval.
"The hospital district has a lot of sensitivity to the parents"
district attorney Tom Panza said.
The child's needs are profound, the result of erros the day Rosalie
Bruno had her baby. The mother's labor progressed rapidly at Broward
General - so quickly her doctor couldn't get thee in time. The baby
started to emerge during a shift change. A nurse disconnected a
vital monitoring machine.
Christopher was born with the umbilical cord strangling his neck.
Deprived of oxygen, he suffered severe brain damage.
A Broward jury awarded the Bruno family $2.2 million. the hospital
district agreed to give the family $1.1 million on Tuesday.
After being approved unanimously by a state House committee, the
Brunos' award must be approved by both chambers of the Legislature.
"His parents have been doing all the work, and they're old
beyond their years," family attorney Scott Schlesinger said.
"With this money, we can help him be a little better, and help
give his parents a little peace."
