"Car crash nets pair millions awarded $8.6 million by jury"
Couple from Boca severely injured
A Broward County jury awarded $3.5 million Thursday to a Boca Raton
couple injured in an April 1984 automobile accident.
Charles Gray, a Winn-Dixie warehouse worker, and his wife, Jane,
a housewife, have been unable to function normally since the head-on
collision at State Road 810 and Northwest 39th Avenue in Coconut
Creek, attorney Scott Schlesinger said.
Charles Gray, 60, walks with discomfort. His wife, 58, is barely
ambulatory.
Cynthia Merle Lewis, 18, admitted liability in the accident, Broward
circuit Judge John Ferris said.
The jury awarded the Grays $1.75 million each for their suffering.
"I think they've done a very good job," Charles Gray said
later. "It doesn't really change anything, but we're very happy
with the job the lawyers have done."
He added that he and his wife have yet to decide how to spend the
money they expect to receive from Wausau Underwriters Insurance
co. He also refused to say how much of the award will wind up in
his lawyer's pocket.
Neither Lewis nor her attorney, Charles Kessier of Fort Lauderdale,
could be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.
