Zicam and Loss of Smell
If you or a family member have had any side effects from taking
the over the counter homeopathic medicine Zicam, it is wise to consult
one of our product liability and personal injury attorneys immediately,
to preserve your possible rights to compensation. The Zicam Cold
Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy
Swabs, Kids Size products have recently been taken off the market
due to recommendations by the FDA. Any remaining product should
be discarded or returned to Zicam for exchange or refunding.
Symptoms resulting from use of these Zicam products include: anosmia
(loss of the sense of smell) or ageusia (loss of taste) and there
may also be burning sensations in the nasal cavities. The burning
sensations were reported to have occurred directly after taking
the product. Loss of the senses of taste and smell follow, and can
be either long-lasting, or possibly permanent. Some major problems
from losing these senses are endangering to a person, including
being able to not smell smoke, spoiled food, or a gas leak. Loss
of these senses may also adversely affect the quality of a person's
life, as they would then be unable to enjoy the flavor and pleasures
of food and aromas.
The drug was created for and marketed as a relief from the common
cold. It allegedly reduced the length and severity of illness when
taken immediately. In fact, a common cold will terminate itself
within 7 to 14 days. Zicam was advertised as a product that would
reduce both the severity and length of a cold.
Other oral Zicam products for combating colds are not under recall.
The Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size have already been discontinued.
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Cold Remedy Gel Swabs are no longer
being actively sold.
Again, if you or any family member has taken these Zicam products
and later experienced loss of smell or taste, it is essential to
consult with your attorney immediately. These are product liability
cases involving personal injury losses, and you may be able to receive
compensation for your damages. There are over 130 reports to the
FDA of sense losses related to use of these Zicam products, often
at the first use of the products.
The maker of Zicam products, Matrixx Initiatives, has faced hundreds
of lawsuits over the last ten years from those persons who claimed
to have lost their sense of smell. There has been one major group
settlement the company reached with 340 plaintiffs for $12 million,
and other lawsuits are ongoing. Our attorneys and their staff have
