Zicam cold remedies, which include Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel,
Nasal Swabs and Kids Size Swabs, have been removed from the market
upon recommendations made by the FDA. This was due to the side effects
which resulted in a previous lawsuit against the makers of Zicam,
Matrixx Initiatives, in which the complainants experienced a loss
of smell, known as anosmia. While Zicam products that are taken
orally are not under recall and remain on the shelves, these other
Zicam products have proven harmful.
When looking for information about what to do if
you had used Zicam and are experiencing this loss of smell and taist,
see your physician. However, after seeing your physician the first
step should be to seek a personal injury or product liability attorney.
We are Zicam attorneys located in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area,
and are here to help you get the compensation you deserve for any
loss you have experienced from the use of any of these products.
The FDA originally issued it's warning about the
use of certain Zicam cold remedies and the risk of developing anosmia
in June of 2009. Since then there have been hundreds of reported
cases in regards to this side effect, and although there has been
one settlement already in which 340 plaintiffs received almost $12
million dollars, there are still ongoing lawsuits in regards to
this problem. As Zicam attorneys, we may be able to represent you
in future cases against this company if you have fallen victim to
these harmful side effects. The side effect of anosmia has been
reported by some victims after several uses of a Zicam product,
but many have reported experiencing these problems after only a
single use.
If you or a family member have experienced the loss
of smell after using any of these Zicam cold remedies, contact our
office as soon as possible to speak with one of our Zicam attorneys.
The first sign that something could be wrong will likely be a burning
sensation in the nose after taking the product. This would then
lead to a loss of smell, and in some cases even a loss of taste,
known as ageusia. These losses can at times be permanent, and at
best will at least last a significantly long period of time. These
losses effect a person's quality of life, as they can no longer
be able to experience the smell of foods we all love, or the taste
that makes eating our favorite foods so pleasurable. The loss of
smell also effects a person's ability to detect things such as gas
leaks, food that has gone bad, or smoke from a fire.
While not part of the Zicam lawsuits yet, it is good
to be aware of other temporary side effects that have been reported
from using these Zicam products. These include: Sinus headaches,
nasal discomfort, hives on the face, arms, and legs, ear discomfort,
eye discomfort and irritation, and a burning sensation while urinating.
If you find that one or more of these side effects have lasted longer
than expected, consult your doctor.
